CBD for Migraines – Can CBD help with migraines?

CBD for Migraines

Only someone who has experienced severe headaches can testify to the unspeakable misery it brings. Sufferers quite often vow to do ANYTHING to get rid of this misery. In this Article we’re talking about CBD for migraines and whether or not it works for migraine headaches.

The answer is, it could, but we are not sure. We hope that it does but like many things in this CBD space right now, it’s uncertain because there just hasn’t been testing done for very long because of the legal status of cannabis. Only now is more and more research and testing starting to emerge. But it looks very optimistic and it looks like migraines, which are pretty complex and can be caused by a lot of things, may could be treated with CBD.

We don’t know that much about migraines but we know people that suffered from them pretty terrible. There are various types of headaches such as tension headaches, sinus headaches, headaches caused by hyper tension (high blood pressure), diabetes related headaches and many more… and then there are migraines.

Nothing compares to the headaches brought on by a migraine attack. A migraine headache is basically the great grandmother of all severe headaches. Migraines also cause other symptoms such as nausea, dizzy spells, vertigo, ear aches, double vision and other eye sight related manifestations, etc. CBD works for pain in general and it’s supposed to work really well as an analgesic for pain.

Medicines and cannabis in migraine

cannabinoids and migrainesThe biggest down side of Migraines other than the excruciating symptoms is the fact that there is no real cure for the condition.

And while there have been a number of symptom relieving prescription drugs on the market for the last few decades such as trazodone, propranolol, L-5HTP, flunarizine, nimodipine, and papaverine, all that these meds actually do is to relieve symptoms.

According to a study that was published in the journal ‘Pharmacotherapy’, science journalists have reported that it can now be positively proven that the frequency of migraines is significantly reduced by Cannabis. 121 patients were studied.

103 of the patients declared that their incidences of migraines have decreased. 15 of the patients stated that there was no difference, while only 3 said they have experienced migraines more often.

The researchers said that inhaling Cannabis works better because that way the Cannabinoids gets into the blood stream faster. So it can act faster. According to Danielle Rhyne some of the patients who inhaled the Cannabis experienced a reduction from 15 migraines per month to only 1 or 2 per month.

CBD for migraines – No Studies but surveys

CBD SurveyThese studies were unfortunately not run on CBD for migraines, which is a pity. However, a survey was run by SFGate that indicates that CBD Oil would be effective against migraines.

Cannabinoids has been used for migraines virtually since the time of the Roman Empire and even before. CBD is a medically significant Cannabinoid that is barely psychoactive and has no dangerous side effects. And according to studies and people, CBD is effective against many painful conditions, including headaches.

A poll obviously differs from a clinical trial. But one cannot deny the significance of the SFGate poll that was taken. The people that responded to the survey questions attested to the fact that CBD Oil relieved their migraines.

Deficiency of Cannabinoids can lead to migraines or Fibromyalgia

endocannabinoid system in medicineAccording to Tech Times earlier research has shown a connection between migraines and a deficiency of endocannabinoids. These are cannabinoids that are naturally produced in the human body to control numerous processes.

As it turns out, migraines may be caused by something called endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome. And this deficiency is, in a simplified explanation, would be just a lack of endocannabinoids. So the body has its own cannabinoids that it produces. One of them being anandamide, which we’ve reported before in our articles.

But the body makes its own cannabinoids as well as being able to process cannabinoids that you take in exogenously (from outside by cannabis / hemp). So if there is a lack of them it can lead to different kinds of problems and migraines are one of them.

But as far as the definitive answer on whether or not CBD works for migraines, we’re not sure. The best thing to do is to try it out.

How to use CBD for Migraines?

There’s a couple variables. We’re not sure if it’s something, where you should take a dose when you have a migraine, well that would be something you can try for sure. So you get a migraine you take a dose of CBD.

But if it’s related to a cannabinoid deficiency, you want to just supplement with every day little by little, to take care of that deficiency. So it could be one of those or both, we just don’t know. We are hoping, that in the future we’re definitely going to find out.

THC might play an important role

THC-vs-CBD-chemical-structureNow the other thing to consider is, that THC might play a pretty important role. Like more THC than what you would usually find in CBD hemp products which can’t be more than 0,3 percent. So that’s why you really have to experiment. Obviously, if you live somewhere, which many of you might, where THC it’s still illegal, then you are limited to just CBD products.

All of this considered, one wants to ask that if THC rich Marijuana can help relieve the symptoms of migraines. Then why not test CBD Oil for the same purpose? Given the fact that across 25 different studies, even the National Institute on Drug Abuse could not find a single piece of significant evidence that suggests that CBD Oil can be harmful to the human body.

Summary what we currently know

If you have migraines, so in theory it should work because CBD is supposed to work very well according to research for pain. So based off that, it could work pretty well for migraines. But pain is a complicated thing and not all pain killers work for all kinds of pain.

The ‘Pharmacotherapy’ research team states that it has very likely uncovered sufficient evidence for states that has incorporated medical marijuana programs, to take CBD into consideration when  making a decision on which diseases and conditions medical Cannabis can be prescribed for. They are also hopeful that their report will become a valuable resource for future researchers when investigating the effects that Cannabinoids have on pain.

The multitude of potential uses for Cannabinoids should definitely be acknowledged. And hopefully studies will be run to compare THC and CBD. To determine whether CBD oil for migraines is as effective. This will open the doors for the medical profession as well as migraine sufferers to extend their scope as far as treatment options with CBD Oil for migraine is concerned.

So it really comes down to, you have to give it a try. the good thing about CBD and experimenting on yourself is, it’s pretty safe. It’s not something you’re going to overdose on.
