The Theory of the Entourage Effect of Cannabinoids & less Drug Interaction

Entourage Effect of Cannabinoids

In this Article we are going to talk about the entourage effect and whether or not it is real. What is the entourage effect? The entourage effect is a theory that cannabinoids and other components naturally found in cannabis plants such as terpenes work synergistically together to produce a better effect than if they were used in isolation.

The easiest example of this is the theory argues that CBD or THC used together, as well as in conjunction with the other cannabinoids and terpenes and components that there normally found together within the plant, work best all together as a group as opposed to just grabbing THC or grabbing CBD out of there as an isolate and putting that into a product or medication.

A Study as the Origin of the Entourage Effect of Cannabinoids

There is some evidence for this. There’s one research study from Israel that gets cited the most on the entourage effect. That study did indeed show that there was better results in the study with the product that had an entourage effect. Which was a full-spectrum product as opposed to an isolate. You can read that study, it’sreally good.

It was a study done on mice, so it’s not a human study. What we are most excited about in the cannabis space or in the CBD space, is the research that will either show if this entourage effect is real or not. We believe that it is real but we do not know for sure.

We have research for it, but we don’t have enough. So that is going to be some of the most exciting information to come out of the space in the next few years.

Anecdotal Information that seems to support this Theory

There is anecdotal information from people, who say that they benefit more from full spectrum CBD Oil than from a isolated Cannabinoid product. If they’ve actually had the experience of comparing an Isolate product to a full-spectrum product.

You wouldn’t really want to make your decision, unless you’ve tried both. Right? Because plenty of people are also sharing that they have had benefits with products made from isolate.

Maybe they don’t even know that it’s made from isolate. They just know they’re taking a CBD product and it gets them some benefit. And they’re saying it works, but they don’t even know that they’re not getting any entourage effect.

The use of CBD oils & Drug Interaction

The point is, the theory is strong, there is some evidence for it. And it’s really exciting to get that confirmed if it’s true or not. Because, one of the most interesting parts is that people what worry about CBD drug interactions.

Many people that want to take CBD, they’re already taking other medications. They’ve been on these medications for a while and they need them for other reasons and they can’t stop taking those medications. Maybe they want to but at first they can’t stop taking certain medications.

But they also want to take CBD along top. So they are interested in drug interactions. That’s good and we always tell people to speak with their doctor or pharmacist about that.

CBD as a Full Spectrum Product prevent Drug Interaction?

What can be really interesting about the entourage effect we were reading recently is, that it could be the case that when cannabis products are used in their natural form, so all the cannabinoids, the full-spectrum product, the entourage effect could prevent drug interactions. In the case that they are actually more likely in high doses of CBD Isolate.

And that the research that we have on CBD drug interactions, where there has been a negative drug interaction, comes from high doses of CBD isolate. Because a lot of that data it comes from studies done with patients that have epilepsy, when Epidiolex was in the approval process, they did a lot of studies.

And most of those studies in general in the CBD space are high dose CBD isolate studies. So it will be very interesting to see if the entourage effect can actually have some kind of preventive effect against the drug interaction.

We don’t know exactly how or perhaps using CBD and getting an entourage effect can allow you to take a lower dose and have the effective dose be much lower and thus decrease the likelihood of a drug interaction because of that. As you can see, it’s all really connected.

Final comment on the entourage effect

At this point we think, if you want to educate yourself, definitely read this study that we are linking at the end of this article. At least read the abstract, so you know what’s going on. It’s definitely the most cited study when it comes to the entourage effect and full-spectrum CBD and cannabis products.

But we just need more research. We need to confirm what we already think or need to know about the entourage effect and if this is a theory or is it real. And we are excited to see the research that comes out specifically on this topic in the next few years.
